How to Choose an Interstate Car Transport Company

There are many vehicle shipping companies on the market today, but not every company is created equally, even if many of them offer nearly identical services. For example, just because a company will move your vehicle from one state to another does not mean that the transition will be smooth.

To protect your property from damage and theft, and to protect yourself from being overcharged, there are a few things to consider to ensure that you are choosing a reputable vehicle transporting service.

Research First

Choosing the right interstate car transport company starts with you. Check out the companies available in your selected area and determine whether they are registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Department of Transport. It’s an absolute requirement that these companies have up to date registration. If for any reason the company lacks such documentation, skip it.

It’s also a good idea to read through customer reviews on third party websites. Reviews on the moving company’s site do not always relay accurate information, as the company can choose to delete negative reviews if they choose. You can try Yelp, Google My Business, the Better Business Bureau, or the Yellow Pages.

Ask Questions

Aside from determining appropriate registration, you should ask a series of questions when you speak to a company’s representative. Be sure to ask about

  • The pricing, including all fees and surcharges
  • The timeline
  • Services offered
  • Vehicle preparation
  • Methods of payment accepted
  • The company’s insurance
  • Documentation required
  • Vehicle protection techniques

These are relatively simple, straightforward questions and if a selected company will not at least provide you with an estimate, it’s in your best interest to seek services elsewhere.

Do Not Settle

If you are not satisfied with the information you have discovered about a company you’re considering, it’s better to keep looking. For example, if a company refuses to ship your vehicle to a specific location, move along. If the company is requesting that you sign a waiver that protects them from legal action if your vehicle is damaged, do not sign it. If the company refuses to deliver your vehicle during daytime hours (a tactic often used to hide damage), find another company.

It’s understandable to think twice about trusting a company to move your car from one state to another. Take your time in researching potential companies so that you are less likely to run into a vehicle transportation nightmare.

Remember, word of mouth is one of the best ways to learn about a company’s performance, so be sure to review the company you choose to work with. Whether the service you had was great or terrible, future customers will benefit from your shared experience.
